The Western Sting leads the 2012 Australian Netball League after a perfect start to the season with victories over the Australian Institute of Sport, Tassie Spirit and Canberra Darters to remain undefeated after round one.
The Sting, one of only three sides to have contested three games in the opening round, sits in top spot on the ANL ladder with six points, ahead of the Queensland Fusion on four points and NSW Waratahs, AIS and Tassie Spirit on one win apiece.
Western Sting set the tone for the weekend early with an upset victory (43-40) on Friday night over the AIS who were contesting their first ANL game since 2010.
The Sting’s incredible performance continued when they equalled their largest ever winning margin of 29 goals over the Tassie Spirit 66-37, before eclipsing that margin with a 76-31 victory over the Canberra Darters on Sunday.
The records continued to tumble over the opening weekend with the Queensland Fusion beating Tassie Spirit 60-51 in the second game of the double header on Friday night before going on to record the team’s highest score and largest winning margin against the NSW Blues, 63-41.
Queensland Fusion’s dream run came to an end after a 55-53 loss to the AIS on Sunday afternoon at AIS Arena; the two goal margin the closest finish in six games between the two sides, leaving the Queenslanders with two wins and a loss at the conclusion of the opening weekend.
The Tassie Spirit overcame two opening losses to bounce back and beat the NSW Blues for the first time in five games when they won 51-44 on Sunday. The victory was Tassie Spirit’s seventh victory since the league’s inception in 2008, their first since a victory over the Canberra Darters in Round 4 2011, and their largest winning margin against a current ANL team.
The NSW Blues and Canberra Darters will head into Round 2 still searching for their first victories of the season after the pair lost their opening two games. The two sides play against each other in Round 2 on Saturday afternoon in Hobart.
