The title of National Netball Champions was up-for-grabs between Victoria and New South Wales at Waverly Netball Centre on Sunday 17th of July. The clash was on from the first centre pass with NSW hungry to maintain their triumphant title for the 4th year running.
NSW made it difficult for the VICs with a very strong defense, particularly from goal keeper April Letton, goal defense Abbey McCulloch, & wing defense Paige Hadley, that were in the faces of VIC attackers Kelsey Browne ad Stephanie Puopolo and shooter Kate Thompson, making it complicated for them to deliver.
With NSW’s score on the rise, VIC’s Kate Moloney was bought on, during injury time, as centre to raise pressure with her fast and fearless play. However, NSW’s goal keeper Letton was “on the ball” against the shooter and it showed in the scores at half time 26 – 17.
The hard work of VICs’ goal keeper Kate Yensch and goal defense Mary Livesy did not go unnoticed from the roaring crowd, but they could not seem to catch a break from the umpires and combined with the accurate shooting of NSW’s goal attack Amy Sommerville, NSW continued to lead by 9 goals. Three quarter time scores 36 – 27.
The almost full stadium was full of support and excitement for both teams and VIC were fighting harder than ever to stay in the game. Strong play from wing attack Kelsey Browne was extremely beneficial to the feeding into the goal circle and set up of well needed goals.
The siren rang to the victory of NSW for the 4th consecutive year. VIC put up a match-long fight but unfortunately their play could not be displayed in the final scoring of 48 – 35.
