Game Report: Victorian Fury (67) defeated Northern Territory Storm (48)
4 SEPTEMBER 2011, Melbourne, Australia.
The Victorian Fury today cemented their finals spot with a 19 goal win over a fiery Northern Territory Storm.
The Territory Storm came out firing, determined to make an impact at the Waverley Netball Centre after going down to the Western Sting by 31 goals last night. Goal attack Victoria Trist found plenty of space and defenders Katherine Hollis and Nardia MacDonald applied pressure to the Fury attack.
Fury coach Cathy Fellows started Vixens Kathleen Knott, Micaela Wilson, and Australian representative player Kelsey Browne on the bench to give court time to Erin McCarthy and Sally Naylor.
Goal Attack Erin McCarthy was injured in the first 10 minutes of the game and co-captain Kathleen Knott took to the court. Her strength and experience showed in the circle with three quick goals levelling the score at quarter time.
Fury started to assert their dominance with Naylor finding a lot of the ball through the mid court early in the second, but strong attack again from Trist kept the Storm in touch. The height of Karyn Bailey and Kath Knott provided clear targets for the Fury attack and their trademark accuracy was the difference in the second half of the quarter when the Fury broke away.
The Fury coaching team added Wilson (GK), Livesey (GD), Browne (WA), and Ashmore (C) to the game, and moved the active Stanaway to wing defence turning up the pressure on the Storm and warming into finals mode. Territory Storm responded scoring just three goals less than the Fury in this quarter, again Trist was instrumental.
Returning Kate Yensch to goal defence and Sally Naylor to wing defence the Fury started the last term with three unanswered goals. For the Storm Klaver was busy in the centre and again MacDonald chased hard.
The Fury ran out 19 goal winners and now move into the finals on 17 and 18 September at Waverley Netball Centre.
Co-captain Kath Knott was happy with the win. “We worked on the systems and set ups we’d done in training, this was our last opportunity to get them down pat before finals” she said.
“It is definitely an advantage being at our home court this weekend and coming back for finals is great. Hearing the crowd cheer is like having another player out there.”
