Game Report: Round 4 of the 17/U National Netball Championships saw the Australian Capital Territory victorious 31-20 over the Northern Territory. It was a close first quarter with the teams evenly matched and fighting for possession. The NT displayed a cohesive unit, no doubt due to their welcoming back seven players from last year. Returning from last year’s squad for ACT was Keely Rodrigo who showed her experience as goal keeper against an effective Deni Taulelei. In the blink of an eye it took a rebound from each team and three changes of possession before Tauleilei scored twice in a row for the NT and thus ending the first quarter down 6-5. With the second quarter ending 18-11, the ACT continued to build on their momentum; fed in by a cohesive mid-court with Victoria Schmahl’s height and Farrah Marolt’s speed and accuracy proving a winning combination. In the third quarter, both teams moved around players. Returning from last year, Emma Walmsey-Stormhouse was brought on as goal defence for the ACT. Jamie Collins replaced Billie Newton as the NT centre player. The quarter ended in ACT leading 24-15. The final quarter was just as competitive, with both teams showing excellent teamwork, though some great individual effort by Georgia Clayden for ACT, who played centre throughout the game helped cinch her team’s outright victory 31-20. ACT’s performance in this match shows that they are capable of improving on their seventh place finish in 2010.
